Avril Lavigne just stunned her fans by returning to the music industry after a five year hiatus with the stirring worship song, “Head Above Water.”

Lavigne has spent much of the last few years battling Lyme disease, and the experience of this brought her closer to God than ever. In the song, she asks God for help repeatedly as she continues to battle the disease:

God keep my head above water / Don’t let me drown / It gets harder / I’ll meet you there at the altar / As I fall down to my knees / Don’t let me drown / Don’t let me drown.

When asked about the inspiration behind “Head Above Water,” Lavigne opened up about her faith in God.

“One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die,” she explained. “My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed, ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the songwriting of this album began.”

Lavigne was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014 after spending a year trying to figure out what was wrong with her health. She first experienced symptoms while on tour the year before, and it took doctors a year to figure out the source of her failing health.

The worship song goes on:

So pull me up from down below / ‘Cause I’m underneath the undertow / Come dry me off and hold me close / I need you now I need you most / God keep my head above water / Don’t let me drown / It gets harder / I’ll meet you there at the altar / As I fall down to my knees / Don’t let me drown.
